She scurried down another wing, past a nurse’s station, and into a room at the end of a long hallway. Daniel turned a light on and closed the door, and her nervousness increased as she realized the purpose of this room.

A high examination table rested in one corner, a fresh sheet of paper covering it. Stirrups were attached to the end of the table, and a long-necked lamp hung from the ceiling. A cabinet and counter unit sat in another corner, and a rolling chair waited next to it. She gulped. This was the kind of room reserved for women’s health checkups. She peered up at Daniel with her mouth agape.

“Emily, I’m going to be giving you a full checkup today. Take your clothes off and sit right here.” The paper covering the examination table crinkled as he patted it. “I’ll be right back.” With that, he left the room, shutting the door behind him.

Okay, so he was definitely serious. Emily paced the small room a few times while glancing at the examination table. And the stirrups. Dear God, the stirrups.
