Naughty Words for Nice Writers by Cara Bristol

Cara Bristol has updated Naughty Words for Nice Writers, a super handy thesaurus for romance authors. I've used this myself and recommend!

Here's Cara...

Two years ago, I published the first edition of Naughty Words for Nice Writers. The sex scene thesaurus developed out of my need for functional, usable synonyms. I wrote the book that I needed. In addition to words for sex acts, body parts, and the like, Naughty Words included some tips on how to write a sex scene. My goal was to serve the full range of eroticism: from sweet/fade to black to graphic/explicit.

Of course, as soon as Naughty Words was published, I thought of more words I could have included, and began planning for a second edition. Naughty Words for Nice Writers (A Romance Novel Thesaurus) contains 800 more synonyms than the original, for a total of 2000+. In addition, since users indicated they also appreciated the sex scene writing tips, I added more how-to type information.

Among the new sections are: voice sounds, descriptions for muscles, sex scene locations, setting the scene with bedroom basics, sexual positions, how to remove clothing, sexual metaphors, and things you might find in a BDSM dungeon.

Although spanking is no longer in the subtitle, the spanking section is still in the book and has been expanded with a couple of new sections.

Naughty Words is available in paperback and ebook. I strongly recommend the paperback because it is more functional. This is a reference book that you will use often, possibly every time you write. You can keep it right by your computer and won’t have to open up your Kindle or a computer file to access it.

Naughty Words FAQS
How can I tell what’s included in Naughty Words for Nice Writers?
Go to the book on Amazon and use the “Look Inside” feature to see the complete Table of Contents.
What’s new in the updated version?
There are additional synonyms in most words lists, there are new words lists (such as muscles, words for naked, how to describe voices), and more how-to type information (places to have sex, how to set the mood in the bedroom, sexual metaphors). I’ve added 800 more synonyms for a total of 2,000+ (the original had 1,200) and more than a dozen new chapters.
Spanking isn’t in the subtitle anymore. Isn’t spanking in the book?
The spanking section is still in Naughty Words. It’s even been expanded a bit.  I only took spanking out of the subtitle to appeal to wider market of romance writers.
I’m torn between the paperback and the ebook. Which is better?
The paperback. Trust me. This is reference book that you will use a lot. Both versions have the same information; however, it’s much easier to look things up in the paperback than in the ebook. Plus, you can make notes in the paperback and write in your own words if you think of any. Besides, if you buy the paperback, you can get the ebook for 99 cents through the Matchbook program. I think of the ebook as the travel companion model.
I already purchased the first edition in ebook format. Can I buy the new version in ebook?
If you already own the ebook, there’s no need to buy it again, and Amazon’s system won’t allow you to buy a book you’ve already purchased. I’ve asked Amazon to notify customers that an update is available. You can get an ebook update for free through Amazon. Instructions here.

Domestic Discipline and the seductive anticipation of spanking by Cara Bristol

I'm thrilled to welcome Cara Bristol back with her new release, Domestic Discipline!  Sexy little excerpt she's brought too. Here she is!
Seduction is the anticipation of sex. It’s a dance, forward and backward. Advance and retreat. Flirting, touches, smiles, sexual innuendo. The build up to sex heightens the actual experience, the intercourse part.  Seduction occurs in erotic romance as the characters get to know each other, discover their attraction, and let the chemistry work its magic before they fall into bed.
The seduction is as hot and stirring as the act itself.
In spanking romance, the same thing occurs. There is an anticipation of a spanking. The heroine does something that she knows she’ll be punished for and she feels such delicious dread. She worries about hero finding out what she’s done, she plots how she might get out of it, she bargains with him, tries to talk him out of it. And then it all culminates the act: she is over his knee and her bottom is being roundly smacked.
Sigh…
Readers not familiar with spanking romance might perceive the buildup, the preamble as fear of the hero instead as seduction. But for spanking fiction lovers, the dread is part of the enjoyment.
What do you think? Do you find the heroine’s dread delicious or unappealing?
An excerpt from Rahn’s Way, Domestic Discipline
Taking a deep breath, she pushed into Rahm’s office. The door snicked shut. The click of doom.
Her heart and stomach fluttered in the way they always did when she had to confront a very pissed off Rahm. And he was. Very pissed off. She could tell from the tilt of his head, the set of his jaw.
“Lock the door,” he said.
After she turned the deadbolt, he stood and rounded the desk. “Is there something you want to say to me?” he asked.
“I had planned to tell you!” she said. Her knees knocked together, but she strove for a good show by stomping to the guest chair and plopping her butt into it. Then wished she hadn’t because now he towered over her, and the small metal plug he’d inserted in her ass before they’d left for work didn’t seem all that tiny. She shifted onto one hip.
He leaned against his desk and crossed his arms. “Tell me what?”
He knew. And she knew he knew, so why did a verbal confession seem to carry so much more weight? Why couldn’t they take their knowledge and fly away like pigs?
Because that wasn’t Rahm’s way. He insisted on a full accounting. Rahm’s way or the highway. Rahm’s way or her ass.
No, Rahm’s way and her ass. He would spank her over this. And it wouldn’t be a pretty- please-spank-me-again-it-hurts-so-good kind of paddling. But a wailing-begging-sleep-on-her- stomach-afterwards spanking.

A chance for love, but can she accept the kink? Guest Post by Cara Bristol

Cara Bristol is re-releasing Destiny's Chance, a paranormal spanking romance! I'd forgotten all about this one and am drooling over that cover! Check out the sexy (spanky) excerpt below! The title is part of the Kindle Unlimited program so if you are a member, you can read it for free!

Fate gave her a gift.  Is she brave enough to accept it?
Destiny Grable has loved Chance Everett for as long as she could remember, but he was never interested in her until a tragic act of fate grants her heart’s desire. Now Chance is all hers—body, mind, and soul. But once they’re together, she discovers he has a kinky side she never knew about. Is she ready for it? Can she handle it? And Chance isn’t the only one with a secret. If he discovers what she’s hiding, will he still want her?

Destiny’s Chance was previously published in 2013. This is a re-release.

Excerpt
A silk kimono slithered off a hanger to land on a chest on the floor of the closet. She hung up the robe and eyed the trunk. Made of aged, saddlelike leather, it had thick rawhide handles and brass hardware.
She dropped to her haunches. “Probably locked anyway.”
She pressed the button. The latch popped. She wavered, then surrendered to curiosity and lifted the lid.
“Oh my God!” She clapped a hand over her mouth and fell on her ass. “That’s his kink.” She stared at the treasure trove of spanking implements. Paying attention to how she removed them so she could replace them exactly as she’d found them, she examined the items. Several paddles of different shapes and sizes in both leather and wood. A pom-pom-like flogger with supple soft leather strands and a stiff wooden handle. Some common items: a hairbrush, a wooden spoon, a ruler. And a strop resembling a belt split into two parts. A tawse! She’d heard of them but never had seen one until now.
She smacked her palm with it. Biting. How would it feel against a bare bottom? She pictured herself laid out like an offering over Chance’s lap as he spanked her bottom until it was supersensitive and then stung her cheeks with the tawse.
Her pussy cheered with a twitch.
She fantasized often about being spanked but had no idea if she’d like it if she experienced it. However, she loved leather—appreciated its hard and soft textures, its masculine scent, the snap it made. Such a versatile material. Sensual. Sexy. She stroked the soft strands of the flogger, then whacked her palm with the tawse again.
She sat cross-legged on the floor like a little girl playing with grown-up toys. All she required for some really wicked games was a playmate named Chance.

Educating His Bride: A 1950s #Spanking Romance by Cara Bristol

I have Cara Bristol visiting today with her newest release, Educating His Bride! This is a sexy 1950s spanking romance and I'm just going to share one of my favorite scenes with you! First, the blurb:
Blurb:
From college coed to professor’s naughty bride…
It’s the 1950s. Never much interested in her studies, Margaret Atwater attends college hoping to graduate with an Mrs. degree instead of a bachelor’s. When she catches the eye of English Professor Henry Thurston, she’s thrilled to marry him, drop out of school, and begin a new life as a married woman and faculty wife. However, Henry is a kinky man who has much to teach his eager young bride—in, and out, of the bedroom. As Mrs. Henry Thurston, Margaret’s sexual education has just begun.
* * *
In this scene, college student Margaret has received a bad grade on her English paper. But a bad grade isn’t all she’s going to get.
Dejected, she slid into a vacant desk, still warm from another student’s derriere. She thumbed through her essay. Cliché. More analysis needed. What about…. Red-inked comments in a masculine scrawl spilled across every single one of the eight pages she’d typed so beautifully. Didn’t typing count for anything?
Her heart sank to the soles of her rounded-toe baby-doll pumps. She’d waited until the night before the due date to write the paper, but she deserved better than a D! And she intended to tell Professor Thurston so.
After the last student left, he gestured to the door. “Shall we go?”
She preceded him into the hall.
“Do you have a class now?” he asked.
“No. My next period is free.”
“Good. We have time to talk.”
They exited Delmar Hall, named for an alumnus patron, and strolled down the walkway over rolling grassy hills dotted with stately oaks and flowering shrubs. A few stubborn blossoms clung to dogwood trees outside the library. Over a knoll, she spotted the Whitmore Building.
Some students glanced their way, a few who knew the professor greeted him, but mostly people ignored them. Margaret clutched her notebook to her chest. “You grade me harder than you do everyone else.”
“Please hold the discussion until we’re in my office.”
They entered Whitmore and climbed the stairs to the second floor. She waited while he checked with the secretary for messages then they proceeded to his office around the corridor. Two black nameplates lettered in white read, Asst. Professor Thurston and Asst. Professor Abernathy. He unlocked the door and motioned for her to enter.
The small office contained two battered wooden desks, the left one buried under a hazardous mountain of paper and academic debris, the one on the right neat as a pin. A tall shelving unit, shared by both professors, sagged under the weight of well-used literature and reference volumes. A wall clock ticked.
“Have a seat.” The professor shut the door and assumed his place behind the neat desk.
She perched on the edge of a straight-back chair, ankles together, and adjusted her skirt over her knees.
The man she loved steepled his fingers. “Now, tell me why you believe I grade you harder than anybody else.”
She wet her lips. “Because you do.”
“My standards are no more exacting for you than they are for any other student. I expect excellence from each of you.”
“I’m sorry. I’ll try harder.”
He flipped open a record book and ran his finger down a list. “As it stands now, your grade is a shaky C minus. If you don’t do well on the final next week, you run the risk of getting a D in the course.” He snapped the grade book closed. “We had a discussion after your last paper, did we not?”
“Yes.”
“I believe I warned you what the consequences would be if you failed to get at least a B.” He opened his middle desk drawer.
Yes, they’d talked about—but he couldn’t be serious.

He withdrew a thick, heavy eighteen-inch measuring stick. “Lock the office door, please.”

Cara Bristol on why she writes Sci-Fi Romance

I have Cara Bristol visiting today with her latest release, Captured by the Cyborg. Cara's books are among my favorites, especially her sci-fi romances. Well, that's not true. Pretty much all of them! She's talking about why she writes cyborg sic-fi romance. Here's Cara:

When I started the Cy-Op Sci-fi Romance series, I wanted to create not just literary heroes, but heroes in the traditional sense: men who were flawed, but valiant and courageous, who risked their lives to make the world a better place.  My cyborg heroes belong to a clandestine paramilitary organization called Cyber Operations, Cy-Ops for short.
Cy-Ops gets called in, not when the going gets tough, but when the going gets impossible. These men—cyborgs—know that on any one mission, they might not come back alive. Because of the covert, dangerous nature of their jobs, maintaining close, intimate relationships is difficult. Until they meet the heroine, of course, and then there’s a whole new level of difficulty. They fall, and fall hard.
I created an evil enemy, Lamis-Odg, a nation planet of religious terrorists. If that strikes a chord and reminds you of present-day threats, well, it’s supposed to. I introduce Lamis-Odg in book one, Stranded with the Cyborg. In Mated with the Cyborg, Lamis-Odg plays a central role. The hero goes undercover on a Lamis-Odg space station and ends up going AWOL to rescue the villainous general’s innocent daughter.
But Lamis-Odg isn’t the only threat out there. And, it’s no coincidence that in the series tagline, “Saving the girl and galaxy one mission at a time,” that the girl comes first. So in book 3 Captured with the Cyborg, I wanted to make the danger even more personal. Lamis-Odg is still mentioned, but remains in the background/backstory, and a new villain emerges: the heroine’s ex life mate.
“Illumina Smith” (her name is an alias) is a Faria, a humanoid alien. Faria marriages are arranged, and they mate for life. Only in very rare instances can their bond be dissolved. After heinous crime committed against her by her life mate, Illumina’s marriage is annulled. But the danger isn’t over…her ex is hunting her, seeking to finish the job—to kill her.
And Dale, our cyborg hero will do anything to keep her safe, even if it means locking her up.
Captured by the Cyborg Description
Sometimes the biggest risk is to one’s heart….
An ex-Cyber Operations field agent, Dale Homme has kissed danger and betrayal more times than he cares to count. Now he runs a clandestine factory beneath the surface of the moon Deceptio, where confidentiality and security matter more than anything. When a beautiful young woman arrives seeking a job, Dale knows within minutes she’s lying. Everything about her is false: her past, the people she claims to know, her reason for being on Deceptio. Illumina Smith? Even her name is an alias.
Logic says send her packing. His gut says she’s in trouble. She needs him. So he’ll do anything to keep her safe….even if it means keeping her captive.
Captured by the Cyborg is third in the Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance series but is written to be read as a stand-alone novella.
Captured by the Cyborg Excerpt
Dale slapped his knees. “Here’s what’s going to happen. First, to put your mind at rest, let me assure you that Alonio is no threat to me. I’m a cyborg. Keeping people safe is what I do. He might succeed in drawing a little blood, but I’ll wipe up the mess with his ass. Second, while I doubt he can gain access to Deceptio, as a precaution, I’ll amp up security.”
“About that…” She had to tell him how she’d changed the entry protocol. He wouldn’t like that she’d gone behind his back. “I need to tell you…”
He held up his hand. “Let me finish. Third, you are not going anywhere. You’re staying right here where I can protect you.”
The autocratic edict set her teeth on edge. “You can’t keep me here!” She hadn’t fought so hard for her freedom and safety only to be dictated to by another man, however well intentioned. She was nobody’s captive!
“Yes, I can.”
Let him try! “As you’ve realized,” she said, “I’m a master sensate. A computer system doesn’t exist that I can’t infiltrate. I can hijack one of your spaceships and be gone before you realize there was a breach. Your entry and exit protocols, for instance—”
He leaned in until his breath caressed her ear, and he whispered, “Did your orientation tour happen to include a visit to the brig?”
He was threatening to lock her up? She jerked away and rounded on him. “What are you saying?”
“Moonbeam’s isolation can cause people to go a little crazy. We haven’t had anyone snap yet, but the possibility exists. You could be the first ward of the Deceptio jail.”
“I can access computer-controlled doors, too!” She crossed her arms.
He laughed. “You and half the employees on Deceptio—which is why they’re not computer controlled.” From his pocket he pulled out a metal ring and dangled some odd-shaped jagged objects. “Good old-fashioned locks and keys. The best antiques money can buy.”
She leaped off the bench. “You’d imprison me?”

Correcting the Coeds and the History of Sex Toys by Cara Bristol

Correcting the Coeds and the history of sex toys…
By Cara Bristol
When I set out to write a spanking romance in the 1950s I wanted it to be erotic and hot, but also historically accurate. I didn’t want to slap a poodle skirt on the heroine and call it “historical.” I knew that spanking existed in the 1950s (of course), but for my story, I also needed to know what sex toys were in use.
Sex toys have been around for a long time. While innovations in materials have been made in the 21st and 20th centuries, the items themselves originated far earlier. Here’s a timeline for some items:
28,000 BC – Dildos. Stone dildos have been found dating back to the Ice Age (dates vary from 23,000-28,000 BC, depending on source.).
500 AD – Ben Wa balls were invented by the Japanese.
1560s – Condoms were used in Europe to help prevent the spread of syphilis. Gabriel Fallopius (for whom Fallopian tubes are named) suggested linen condoms. (There’s evidence to suggest that condoms were in use 3000 BC, even 15,000 BC).
1860s – Rubber condoms and diaphragms /cervical caps came into usage after vulcanized rubber is patented in 1844.
1869 – Vibrator invented. Steam powered, vibrators were used by doctors to treat women’s “hysteria.”
1892 – Butt plugs are advertised. Made of hard rubber, “rectal dilators” were ostensibly created to treat hemorrhoids and constipation.
1960 – The first birth control pill is available in the U.S.
Of course, these are the first recorded examples of sexual aids. This does not mean that people did not fashion their own. I’ve read historical romances in which wooden butt plugs were used; I don’t know how accurate that was.
But now you know that when you read my story, Educating His Bride, all the toys mentioned in the story were used in the 1950s!
Here are a couple of sources: Ancient origins of sex toys, history of birth control.
Educating His Bride from Correcting the Coeds blurb

An excerpt from Correcting the Coeds
Her feet obeyed, even as her mind rebelled. Will he really do this? Her hand shook as she twisted the key. She supposed she could have fled screaming down the corridor, except ladies did not run, let alone scream.
Henry closed the Venetian blinds and switched on a lamp.
She leaned against the stout wood of the door, her eyes riveted on the nasty ruler.
“Come forward, please.” He beckoned with a curl of his fingers. “Put your hands on the desk. Do not remove them until your punishment is over.”
“Henry, please,” she beseeched.
“Now, Margaret.” His expression implacable, he folded his arms. There would be no budging him.
Seeing him so, so stern did something funny to her insides. Made them quiver. It wasn’t all nerves, either. She shuffled forward to place her palms against the blotter. I can do this. How bad can it be? He won’t spank me hard. He only intends to scare me.
He moved the chair out of the way. “Fifteen spanks.”
Fifteen? She’d expected two or three at most. Hadn’t expected any if the truth be told.
She sensed movement and then the ruler struck her backside, blazing a line of fire, and she cried out.
“That’s one,” he said.
The only thing worse than being spanked would be the humiliation of discovery. She clamped her lips together and braced for the next strike.
Another pain-laden streak lanced through several layers of clothing. She couldn’t imagine the impact on bare skin.
“Two,” he said.
Thwack! The length of the ruler struck both cheeks at once, and her hands flew off the desk to protect her bottom.
“You know where your hands belong. Put them there unless you want extra strokes.”
She slapped her palms onto the desk.
“That was three,” he said.
A whoosh then the measuring stick seared the crease where buttocks met thigh and, despite her resolve to remain silent, a little cry escaped.
“I’m sorry I have to punish you, but you promised to do better. You made a commitment. That was four.”
Margaret sucked back the tears. “Maybe I didn’t break a promise. Maybe I’m not smart enough.”
“I don’t believe that about you for an instant. You didn’t do well because you didn’t apply yourself.”
He applied himself with another stroke that got Margaret dancing on tiptoes in an attempt to alleviate the burn.
